Revelation IOMMA – Indian Ocean Music Market – 2017
“Pei Discovery “ Award – SAKIFO Festival 2016
Kaloune build a new poetical speech, at the frontier of different ways of expression (prayer, song, nursery rhyme, traditional Creole and French song, poetry). As a modern « griot », with the only sound of her voice and mbira, holy instrument used in Zimbabwé ceremonies Kaloune tells who she is : a young creole woman open to the world. On stage, Kaloune is performing with an electronic producer for an experimental and psychedelic trip in time, travelling in her imaginary.
Kaloune was born in La Réunion Island, thirty two years ago. She grew up in Saint-Benoit in Bras Fusil in the east coast of the Island where Gramoun Lélé, the first reunionese wordly known traditional singer was born. Listening and playing Reunionese traditional music “MALOYA”, this music inherited by creole slaves, her ancestors was and is still her everyday life. In her childhood, she sings moslty in rituals for ancestors and spirits of Nature (prayers for love, courage, and strength of Nature). Kaloune soon realizes the power of singing, the path to the liberation of her-self, the to the redemption of her own soul. Understanding the complexity of her history, leads her to write poems, tell stories to share with the others. She, therefore writes her first book “Superstition Sega”, a collection of poems in creole in 2010 which deals about identity and transmission.
After she graduated a master in international relations, she flew away to Zambia as a volunteer. She travels throuhough Africa (Zimbabwé, Mozambique, Tanzania) she ended in Mayotte as a French teacher. After this travelling experience, Kaloune comes back in La Réunion where she wants to be involved in the development of her own country. She dedicated her life to writing about myth, history, ritual, poetry, spirituality, blackwomanhood because she thinks that Reunion Island has a message of love to spread around the world. That ’s the legacy of her ancestors who have known slavery, and have fought against this political regime to maintain their cultural identity, to share love and make bad turn into good.
In 2015, she launched her second book “Kayé La sirène” (the book of the mermaid) and become a comedian in LOLITA MONGA ‘s company. This year marks a change of direction in Kaloune career with a participation to the IOMMA and SAKIFO festivals and fairs. She ‘s one of the finalist of Indian Ocean music price. She’s exploring new sounds, especially electronic music and works on the launching of an E.P “Kalouména”.
