Papanosh is back on the road, after their debut China tour in March 2017 within the frame of Francophonie festival (Beijing, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Shenzhen).
Pick five musicians among the France’s best young jazzmen (Winner « Jazz Migration » 2013, selected for Jazzahead 2015 ! “Echoes of France”), bestow an encyclopedic musical knowledge on them then blend everything together and you’ll get Papanosh. With significant space devoted to groove, rhythmic group improvisation and the history of jazz language, the Papanosh musicians bring a breath of freshness to the notion of Imaginary Folklore. Papanosh’s sound and ethos can be traced to the hereditary line of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Papanosh offers a music that is as explosive in its result as it is coherent in its conception: a music full of imaginative joy, improvised risk, tender smiles and sonic rapture. Last appearances: Festival Banlieues Bleues (Paris France), Jazzdor Berlin & Strasbourg, Europajazz (Germany), London Jazz (UK) , Jazz au Chellah (Rabat, Morocco), Jazz sous les Pommiers (France), Manchester Jazz Festival (UK), Casa da Musica (Porto Portugal), NDR Radio Hamburg (Germany), Uzeste musical (France), Barbes Club (Brooklyn, USA), B-Flat (Berlin, Germany), Hangar 23 (Rouen, France), Fête de l’Humanité (Paris, France), Unterfacht (Munich, Germany), Natjazz (Bergen, Norway), Edinburgh Jazz Festival (UK)…
“The Papanosh quintet from France were possibly the pick of [The Jerusalem Jazz Festival] in terms of pure inventiveness and entertainment value. There was ne’er a dull moment in their show, in the Israeli Art gallery, as the group members careened through all manner of genre, style and mindset. Having keyboardist Sébastien Palis alternate between piano and Hammond B-3 organ helped to keep the sonic and stylistic fulcrum pivoting nicely, and there was a delightful theatrical spot with Palis conducting saxophonist Raphael Quenehen and trumpeter Quentin Ghomari. This was go-withthe- flow music at its unfettered finest.” Barry David, The Jerusalem Post, December 2017
2018 is fully loaded for the band with 2 new creations : “HOME” with Roy Nathanson (American poet and sax player) and Nappoleon Madox (lyrics)… and “PREVERT PARADE” with André Minvieille. The 2 new projects are also available on tour.
Behind this Eastern European name lies a jazz quintet inthe great tradition of musicians who literally live libertarian music. At the crossroads of the Lounge Lizards’ New York underground and of Occitan reminiscences of Bernard Lubat, Papanosh is a house with wide open doors and windows!
On stage, the music, though already written, keeps creating and inventing… : it’s an acoustic directory in its raw sound and freedom, a demonstration of primitive energy where urban horns and birdsongs intertwine or merge. Papanosh’s albums are at the image of the show, terribly alive and joyful!
